    juggling

I will post a video at some point which shows a juggler we saw while on vacation. He was a street performer and was really very, very good. The girls were captivated by him. As I watched him I learned something…and no, it wasn’t how to juggle. I learned that when you have a bunch of stuff up in the air at the same time, you will sometimes drop something. But I learned that if the people you are juggling for want you to succeed, they want you to amaze them, then they are quick to forgive, quick to cheer, and quick to encourage.

Do you feel like you are juggling projects (stuff) in life? Do the people around you cheer you on if you slip up and drop something or do they condemn you for not being perfect?

You know what happened as I/we watched this juggling man juggle and cheered him on? As more cheered and encouraged him, he did better and better….he succeeded. I just wonder how many of us would do better at/in life if we had a crowd around us that supported us. This is the type of church I am trying to build….a church for jugglers….

Slapdown:  Mark Driscoll vs. Deepak Chopra on the Existence of Satan

Orginally published on Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 7:39 AM

    by Todd Rhoades

Set your Tivo or stay up late tomorrow night. Friday, March 20 is the day that Mars Hill Church in Seattle will host ABC’s NightLine program and when Mark Driscoll will debate author and spiritual guru Deepak Chopra on whether or not Satan exists.

Also arguing against the existence of Satan will be Bishop Carlton Pearson. Tag teaming with Driscoll will be Annie Lobert, the founder of “Hookers for Jesus”.

    Should be an interesting exchange…

    You can read more here…

Do you think these type of debates are worthwhile?

Is this a smart move by Driscoll?

Who do you think will win?

Obama needs to thnk before speaking about education

I read this news clip this morning:
“The president acknowledged that a rethinking of the traditional American school day may not be welcome — “not in my family, and probably not in yours” — but is critical.
“The challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom,” Obama said. “If they can do that in South Korea, we can do it right here in the United States of America.”

So now America needs to raise the bar so that we can become like South Korea? Are yo kidding me? Obama has already made some dumb moves and his little followers keep passing initiative after initiative. They are all products of the education system here in America and I guess they are saying that they are really not educated enough to run our country….I would probably agree with that one….

But lengthening the school day? That is the stupidest thing I think I have ever heard. Do you know how much of the school day is actually used to teach? Making the school day longer isn’t going to amount to a hill of beans difference! What it will do is once again take the time away from parents…they will work longer hours at the office, families will fracture even more and our society will continue to crumble… The issue isn’t teaching in the classroom, its discipling in the classroom. The majority of the teacher’s day is consumed with disciplining the few not teaching the many…

How about Obama legislate rewards for parents actually staying home more and being parents to their children so that the education system and the government don’t have to raise them. Or maybe they should just be wards of the state….what a joke…

I cannot stand these “general” policies that effect everyone…not just the pockets of America that actually need the help. That is what drives the deficit up. If we spend money in general and not specific ways we will never find balance.

I usually don’t go off on this stuff but stupid is as stupid does. I know many people out there wave the Obama flag…but maybe they will now see that he is far more socialistic than they thought because now he is once again messing with my home….

    O.K. – i feel better….wait a minute…no i don’t…..grrrrrr

If you want more time with your kids home school. Studies have show that it is time away from school that widens the education gap between rich and poor (see Outliers by Malcome Gladwell). Year round school is the best solution for the problem but longer school day might help as well – as long as the homework load is lessened (unfortunately I doubt it will happen though, which will just leave kids working even later into the evening, and more sleep deprived the next day).

I also think school should start later (too many sleep deprived students who can’t learn effectively) – so ending later makes sense. Maybe they could make the longer school day optional for parents who work later.

    Daddy First…Pastor Second

This morning Karis and I had a Daddy Breakfast Date. On our way there she decided that she wanted to talk back to me a little bit. She is at the age where she thinks she is right and wants me to know that she is…even though I know that she isn’t (I know…she gets that from her mom of course). I asked Karis, “Karis…who’s the Daddy?” She said, “you are Daddy” (with the tone of an apology). And then she said, “Daddy, I thought you were going to say, “Who’s the pastor?” My response was, “Baby girl, I’m daddy first and pastor second.”

You ever think about what you say after you say it? Kinda like you hear yourself talk as the listener not as the speaker. Well that’s what happened to me. As I said that I realized that I was speaking truth but as I spoke I could not help but to use that moment as a “reality check” in my life. Am I truly daddy first and pastor second?

I am very convicted in the fact that Biblically, if I am not the leader in my home that God intends for me to be, I am not eligible to be a pastor. In other words, if I can’t shepherd my own flock…what right do I have to shepherd anyone else? He who is faithful with little will also be faithful with much. I know we refer to this passage or apply it only to money, but doesn’t it apply to our children and family as well? I believe that the principle is definitely transferable.
