Reflections on the seasons in the cycle of life- but does it have to be?
I have been reading the book of Judges lately. There is so much there that causes me to reflect on my own life, rebellion at times, great blessing at other times, and everything in-between. What i recognize is that there are several seasons in the cycle of the Hebrew people…and i think that you will agree that they closely resemble the same seasons in the cycle of our lives as well.
- There is a time of blessing. As time goes on the Israelites move from pleasing God to pleasing self…
- Rebellion or Disobedience follows as they live for a season turning their backs on God
- Next, Captivity or Servitude happens. This is a season when they fall captive to the enemy (usually the Philistines or Babylonians…
- Then this leads to repentance as the Israelites recognize what they have done….they begin crying out to God
- God hears the cries of His children and Salvation ensues…..
As i look at this pattern, I see it in my life as well. Now it doesn’t seem to take 40 years for me to move for one season for all of these can happen in a day or week or sometimes a month. But why is it that it is usually after God blesses that we move to rebellion? I believe it’s because we are not in a crisis and therefore don’t see our need for God. That’s a pretty warped point of view but it’s honest. In times of plenty, when everything is going great, we see ourselves as much larger than we really are. In times of want, or times of need, we properly see ourselves as small and God as big….
So what’s the key- how do you break this cycle of seasons? I believe the answer lies in understand that man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever…..think about it-
