Just a quick update as we are on vacation this week in San Diego. We found a great hotel to stay in while in San Diego. It is right downtown among the hustle and bustle. The part of the whole stay that has been pretty funny to us is that there is a “comic book” convention going on at the same time and we are in one of the main hotels as the convention goers. There are so many things that I could write but I really don’t want to offend anybody. What I will say is that God is very creative and there is something for everyone :) . There are people of all ages and even parents who dress their children up as comic characters…..don’t know about that one….GIVE THE KID A CHANCE!!! But anyway, I asked a group of teenagers this morning about the conference and they told me that it was more of a “pop culture” conference…not just a room full of comic books and vendors. hhhhh the memories that we have…we are having a good time to say the least…….but if you want to know if 20 somethings dress up like star trek characters….the answer is……drum roll…..YES!!!….amazing

My meeting with “her” kw will be happening this weekend. Ill call you at church and let you know how it goes. JD

This is a story of one of my friends, Kelly. She is a great girl with a heart for the Lord. This is a reminder that all of us have a story to tell…so tell it!

This is about a 10 minutes clip of Marc Driscoll talking about Hard and Soft Religion…what are your thoughts?

      Favorite lines:
      1. “There are more verses in the Bible on unicorns than smoking?”
      2. “Detach from the expectation of the outcome.” Wow… I think I have said that before… in a little different way.

I like what he is showing, but these are the extremes. Most people live in the middle. There are some aspects and practices to religion that do bring us closer to Jesus. What is the difference between religion and spiritual disciplines? Can’t following disciplines seem to outsiders as religion. Interesting stuff… got me thinking. Needed more than 10 minutes.

  • Sermon update

claytoncoates 9:42 pm on July 14, 2008 Permalink | Reply

It was great to be back in the saddle this past weekend. I preached on Sunday night at a friend’s church in Texas and I enjoyed it. I had never preached this sermon before (mainly because I have severe hangups on repeating sermons) and I had never even been in this auditorium. For a communicator, knowing your audience and auditorium can be huge comfort factors. None-the-less, I feel that it went well. I feel as if the sermon content was as much for me as it was the audience because it dealt with Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God. I will make my name known to all nations, I will make my name known to all the earth.” This is a psalm written to be sung in remembrance of the time when the Lord delivered King Hezekiah and the children of Judah from the Assyrians. When there seemed to be no way out, God showed up and wiped out 185,000 soldiers while the children of Judah were asleep. God is telling the enemy to “Be Still!”…and in turn we remember how we (God’s children) are required to Be Still…

It was a fast trip and I am officially tired. I think I roled in at around 1:00 a.m. my time… It was an early morning with 5 straight hours of meetings before being able to get some work done. All in all, life is good…and I am tired…

  • I get to preach this weekend!

A friend in Texas is going to be out of town on vacation and I have opportunity to fly back home and preach this Sunday night. His church is FBC Mansfield. We lived just down the street when were in Texas. I speak often out here in CA but it is just not the same. The central passage is Psalm 46:10 and the title of the message is “Be.” You can listen to a whole series that I preached in EPIC called “push pause.” I covered some of my journey in this series but never uncovered the truth behind this passage as I have this time. It excites me to no end to be able to once again prepare God’s feast and serve it to His people. More to come!

That’s awesome! Wish I could be there to listen to it and see ya! I’ll be praying for you though that God may give you the words to say that will give people a better understanding of His Word and that will draw people closer to Him.

Can’t wait to hear how it goes! Have a safe trip!

  • Reflexions on 2 Chronicles 7:14

vs 14 “if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

When we pray, we yield our heart and lives towards God/to God. As we pray we seek the face of God. As we seek God, we find God. As we find God, we realize that both sin and God cannot co-exist so one has to give….and it’s sin. When the sin is dealt with, God hears us and we can more clearly hear Him….and healing takes place….

So often times, there is a natural progression in scripture that I overlook at first glance. Meditating has allowed this passage to take root and breathe in my life. There is so much in my heart that is going on in this very moment. It is not that I need healing, but rather I need to hear. Meditation is continuing and the verse for this week is Psalm 46:10.

  • Meditation Update Coming! Please pray for fires in CA

claytoncoates 10:06 am on July 5, 2008 Permalink | Reply

Its been about 8 months since the last big outbreak of fires here in CA. That time we could see the flames from our house and two families in our small group had to flee their homes. They and their homes were fine in the end but it was a very unpredictable time. The fires are back but this time they are north of us. There are about 1,400 fires covering thousands and thousands of acres. It is very hot out here and there really doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. Please pray for the safety of our firefighters who risk their lives to keep people and even their possessions safe.

If you don’t know, the rainy season here is late winter. That is really the only time that it rains all year long, except for a few mists. The better the rainy season is, the better the burn season is. Everything grows well, then dies and is just sitting there waiting to ignight. A flying loose ember or a cigarette butt is all that it takes to take down an entire forest…its just life out here in CA….thanks for your prayers..
